Honours Board for the Court of Aldred

A new honours board for the Court of Aldred No 15 (Province of Northumbria) was dedicated at the meeting of the Court held on 4 July 2022 at Chester le Street.

The board was donated by MW Bro. Paul W. Johnston, Primus Master, and W. Bro. Simon D. Robinson and was dedicated in a memorable ceremony “to the memory of the founders and all brethen of the Court who passed before their time”.

Ceremony of the Ancient Charges 2022

The annual Ceremony of the Ancient Charges was held at St Saviourgate Masonic Hall, York on Monday 18 July 2022.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Order from across the UK, despite the hot weather and possible travel disruption.

Presiding Officer RW&EmBro Dr Chris Ansell said “The Ancient Charges ceremony celebrates and commemorates the legendary assembly of masons at York in 926, which is a core element of the ethos of the Masonic Order of Athelstan and a part of “masonic folklore”. It is only performed once per year, at York, and it has been really gratifying to see the number of brethren who have travelled considerable distances in difficult conditions to be present and in many cases take an active part in the proceedings”.

The ceremony makes use of masonic working tools which were expertly hand made for the ceremonial by Bro David Kirwan:

The ceremony followed a most successful double instruction at the Court of Eoforwicingas No 160 and despite very warm conditions the brethren dined together afterwards in a most convivial manner.

Provincial Grand Master for Spain

On Tuesday 18th January 2022 the MW Grand Master appointed and virtually invested RWBro Barrie Mansell KCAG as the new Provincial Grand Master for the Athelstan Province of Spain. RWBro Barrie then proceeded to appoint and virtually invest his deputy, WBro Rodney Bignell KAG. Nearly 50 members of the Order tuned in to witness the most impressive Zoom event.

We wish RWBro Barrie and WBro Rodney every success in their new roles.

Court of Aldred No 15 – 15th Anniversary

Today the Court of Aldred No. 15 celebrates its 15th Anniversary.

Consecrated on Saturday 27th January 2007 at Chester-le-Street, County Durham. A little under 300 yards from the spot where King Athelstan prostrated himself before the coffin of St Cuthbert in 934AD. He bestowed several gifts to the shrine which can still be seen at Durham Cathedral.

The late RW Bro. Bryan Wills undertook most of the ceremonials after which the then Grand Master also Constituted the Province of Lindsey.

The Primus Master of the Court was a certain W. Bro. Paul W. Johnston, the Primus Senior Warden being Bro. Bill Carlyon and the Primus Secretary, W Bro. Ray Dinning.

The Court now sits within the Province of Northumbria.

Grand Court 2021

The 2021 Assembly of the Grand Court took place on Saturday 30 October 2021 at Leicester, the first since 2019. The annual assembly of The King’s Council of the Ancient Masonic Order of Alfred the Great occurred on the previous evening, also at Leicester. A further notable event was the Consecration of The Court of Keith Ansell at Grantebrycge No 150 on 29th October. The new Court honours the name of one of the founding fathers of the Masonic Order of Athelstan.

Pythagorean Court No 128

On Saturday October 2, 2021 The Pythagorean Court No.128 installed its new WM Bro Andreas Arkouzis and his Court for the ensuing year 2021-2022.

The W Bro George Morfopoulos ProvGMar, performed the Installation in the presence of 13 members of the Pythagorean Court as well as in that of 4 visitors, the R W Bro Constantine Stephanides, KCAG, PGM., the W & Em Bro Agis Papadopoulos, PPrEmGPrior, the W Bro Konstantinos Korontzis, ProvGAlm, and the WM Bro Andreas Markouizos of the Euclidean Court No.129.

Quadruple Instruction at Keynsham

On Monday 27th September 2021, at a meeting of the Court of Aethelbald No 62 in Keynsham, a quadruple Instruction Ceremony was carried out by 93 year old RW Bro Mervyn Western, PJGW, WM of the Court.

The Worshipful Master, Mervyn gave a fine performance, which was appreciated by all in attendance, which included Deputy Grand Master RWBro Tony Burke, Grand Prior RW&EmBro Chris Ansell and Deputy Provincial Grand Master WBro Andrew Barrett. Three of the brethren were Instructed as a courtesy Instruction for the soon-to-be formed Court of King Ecgberht.

Many expressed their wonderment at the ritual and reflected on their own ritual standards, when compared to this gentleman. The evening was greatly enjoyed by all who attended.

Plinth Court No 91

Plinth Court No 91 (Oklahoma, USA) recently held their first meeting after lockdown, and sent us this image of brethren who participated in the King Athelstan 5K run/walk earlier this year, proudly sporting their participants medallions.

Athelstan Tapestry Presentation at Kingston upon Thames

On Friday 3rd September 2021 the MW Grand Master presented a magnificent tapestry commemorating King Athelstan to All Saints Church, Kingston. Kingston is the ancient site of coronation of Athelstan and other Anglo Saxon kings.

The tapestry (left) was received by Rev Jonathan Wilkes on behalf of the church and will be prominently displayed there to all visitors.
