The solemnity was presided over by the Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Brazil, RW Bro Felipe Eduardo Portela de Paulo, on which occasion the ceremonies of Instruction, Installation and Consecration of the new Court were performed according to the ancient traditions of the Order, with W Bro Sandro Gonçalves as Primus Master.
During the Ceremony, the Provincial Grand Master conferred important honorific distinctions.
The Grand Master of the Grand Orient of the State of Mato Grosso, W Bro Josué Paulo Fernandes, was honoured with the Rank of Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon, in recognition of his distinguished career and the notable services rendered to the Order.
W Bro Rogério Toledo Filho received the Rank of Provincial Grand Guard, likewise in recognition of his dedication and his contribution to the foundation of the Court.

The Ceremony was also marked by many moments of fraternity and institutional recognition, most notably the exchange of mementoes between the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Felipe Eduardo Portela de Paulo, the Grand Master of the Grand Orient of the State of Mato Grosso, W Bro Josué Paulo Fernandes, and the Primus Master of the Court of Cuiabá Nº 210, W Bro Sandro Gonçalves Delgado, symbolising the firm bonds of friendship and cooperation between the institutions.
Also, highlighting the presence as part of the provincial grand team of W&Em Bro Jorge Henrique, Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Epirito and MWGM of the GLMMM of Espírito Santo.

We further record the participation, as a founder, of the Grand Superintendent of District 55 of the Order of Knights Templar Priests, W Bro Rodrigo Ribeiro Verão, whose presence graced the ceremony, and who is also Past Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Brazil.
We equally highlight the honourable participation of W Bro Osvaldo Roberto Sobrinho, a historic figure of great significance for the State of Mato Grosso for Brazil and Honorary Grand Master of the Grand Orient of the State of Mato Grosso, who likewise numbers among the founders of the Court.

At the close of the solemnity, the Provincial Grand Master addressed words of welcome to the new members of the Order, thanked all the Brethren involved in organising the foundation for their efforts, and expressed his wishes for the full success of the Court of Cuiabá Nº 210, stressing the importance of preserving the traditions, of fraternity, and of the expansion of the Order of Athelstan in Brazil.

A truly memorable day in Chesterfield, where more than 70 Brethren gathered as the Province of Mercia proudly Consecrated The Court of Pecsaetan Nº 208 in the The Masonic Order of Athelstan in England, Wales and its Provinces Overseas.

It was a great honour to welcome our Grand Master, MW Bro Charles Aspinell, GCAG, whose leadership, together with that of our Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Dr Alan Beckerton, our Provincial Marshal, W Bro Ivan Scott, the Grand Marshal, and the Active Grand and Provincial Teams, ensured the Ceremonies throughout the day were conducted with dignity, precision and warmth.
Their professionalism, dedication and meticulous attention to detail helped make the Consecration a truly memorable occasion.

The Consecration marks another significant milestone in the continued growth of the Province of Mercia, an achievement of which everyone involved can be immensely proud.
We wish The Court of Pecsaetan Nº 208 every success as it begins its journey and look forward to seeing it flourish for many years to come!

Honouring the Legacy of King Athelstan!

Athelstan’s birthday is celebrated on the 12th July, marking the significant unification of the English tribes under his rule in 927 AD. This event is considered a pivotal moment in the history of England, laying the foundation for the nation we know today.
12th July is considered England’s Birthday. This year they’ll be 1099 years of age – making England amongst the oldest countries in the World!!!
To mark this special occasion, the Provincial Grand Court of South East Asia, (PSEA) together with the Royal Society of St George, hosted a celebratory “High Tea” and social afternoon, attended by ninety brethren, wives, partners, family members and distinguished guests.

A Knights Templar Arch of Steel welcomed distinguished representatives from various Companion Orders and Societies from throughout South East Asia, including the Provincial Prior of South East Asia, the Most Worshipful Grand Master of AMD of the South East Asia, Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of South East Asia and the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Mark Master Masons of South East Asia.
The Province was further honoured by the presence of the Assistant Grand Master (AGM) in Charge of East Asia of the Masonic Order of Athelstan in England, Wales and its Provinces Overseas.
Other distinguished guests included community representatives from the Royal Society of St George; the President of the Malaysia British Society; Principals of Royal Arch Chapters and a number of Craft Masters.

Following loyal toasts and National Anthems, guests were treated to an informative and engaging presentation on the life and achievements of King Athelstan, delivered by our Provincial Grand Master (PGM), RW Bro Russell Stuart.
There was then an address and video further explaining why the date is that of England’s Birthday, presented by RW Bro Kerikattu John Kuruvilla, AGM in Charge of East Asia.
A highlight of the afternoon was the ceremonial cutting of the commemorative Birthday Cake by the PGM, together with Mr Matthew Cooper of the Royal Society of St George.
At the conclusion of the formal programme, guests enjoyed a traditional high tea.
The celebrations concluded with a programme of musical games and a historical quiz, providing an enjoyable and fitting end to an afternoon of fellowship, learning and celebration.

The Province of Spain was deeply honoured by the presence of the Most Worshipful Brother Charles Jonathan Aspinell, GCAG, Grand Master, on the distinguished occasion of the meeting of The Court of Castillo de Rougemont Nº119 together with the 10th Anniversary Meeting of the Provincial Grand Court of Spain

The meeting was held at Sociedad Compás, Calle Toledo 14, Ciudad Quesada, Rojales, in the beautiful province of Alicante on Spain’s renowned Costa Blanca.
Ciudad Quesada is well known for its welcoming international community, Mediterranean atmosphere, and rich Spanish heritage, making it a fitting location for such an important and fraternal occasion.

Ciudad Quesada (Rojales, Alicante) is approximately 440 km south-east of Madrid by road, with a driving time of around 4 hours and 20 minutes depending on traffic.
Rojales itself is a historic town dating back several centuries, famous for its traditional Spanish architecture, historic bridges over the River Segura, and close ties to the cultural history of the Valencian region.

The area has become a respected centre for many Masonic and fraternal gatherings within Spain due to its strong spirit of friendship and hospitality and is well known for its warm climate, golf resorts.

By command of the RW Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Barrie Roy Mansell, Brethren assembled in harmony and fellowship to celebrate not only the annual meeting of the Province, but also a significant milestone, ten years of continued growth, dedication, and service to the Order of Athelstan in Spain.

The presence of the Grand Master added great distinction to the proceedings and made the day especially memorable for all present.
The occasion reflected the enduring strength of the Order, the unity of the Brethren, and the proud traditions upheld within the Province of Spain.

ANZAC Day remembrance in Kuala Lumpur
In Malaysia, Freemasons took part in the ANZAC Day commemorations at Tugu Negara, Kuala Lumpur’s National War Memorial, standing alongside international dignitaries, veterans and defence representatives.
The Masonic Order of Athelstan in South East Asia played a key role in the service, with Brethren participating in wreath-laying and remembrance activities. The occasion reinforced the importance of international remembrance and shared respect for those who served and sacrificed.
The event also marked a strengthening of engagement between Freemasons, veterans’ organisations and diplomatic communities across South East Asia, highlighting the global reach of remembrance traditions.

Armed Forces Covenant signing – Mark Masons’ Hall
A significant milestone in Freemasonry’s support for the Armed Forces community was the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant by the Grand Masters of Mark Masons’ Hall Orders, as reported by the United Grand Lodge of England.
This formal commitment reinforces the organisation’s pledge to ensure that those who serve, or have served, in the Armed Forces are treated with fairness and respect. It also strengthens ongoing collaboration between Masonic Orders and national Armed Forces support frameworks.

Service Over Ambition: The Scarlet Mantle

Among the many distinctive features that set the Masonic Order of Athelstan apart from other Masonic Orders is its remarkable emphasis on scholarship, historical reflection, and the celebration of virtue through symbolism.
Within this unique framework stands one of its most prestigious distinctions —The Order of the Scarlet Mantle— an honour reserved not for ambition, but for service.
Unlike many Masonic ceremonies that commemorate a candidate’s progress through degrees, the Scarlet Mantle has always represented something different.
It is an acknowledgement that a Brother has already demonstrated unwavering commitment to the Order, its principles, and its Brethren.
It is, in every sense, a visible expression of gratitude bestowed upon those whose actions have strengthened the Order through dedication rather than expectation.

A Historical Foundation
The inspiration for the Order reaches back to the closing years of the ninth century and to one of the defining moments in Anglo-Saxon history.
According to later historical tradition, the young King Athelstan was knighted by his grandfather, King Alfred the Great, around A.D. 898.
During this ceremony Alfred is said to have invested his grandson with a magnificent scarlet mantle together with a sword whose golden hilt was adorned with precious jewels.
This event has often been described as the earliest recorded knighting in English history, symbolising not merely military distinction but the recognition of honour, loyalty, wisdom and future leadership.

The founders of the Masonic Order of Athelstan adopted this powerful historical tradition as the basis for a special honour within the Order.
Rather than creating another progressive degree, they established a reward that would recognise exceptional service rendered to the Order itself.
Thus, from the earliest years of the Masonic Order of Athelstan, the Order of the Scarlet Mantle emerged as an appendant Order governed by its own Statutes while remaining inseparably connected with the ideals of King Athelstan and the legendary Assembly of York in A.D. 926.

A Reward Rather Than a Degree

One of the most distinctive characteristics of the Scarlet Mantle is that it is not obtained by application or progression.
Membership is conferred solely upon Brethren who have rendered distinguished and meritorious service to the Order.
Such service may include years of leadership, ritual excellence, educational contribution, administrative dedication, or exceptional efforts in establishing and strengthening Courts and Provinces.
In a society where honours often follow position, the Scarlet Mantle reminds us that true recognition follows service.
This philosophy perfectly reflects the motto of the Order:
Honor – Virtutis – Praemium: Honour is the Reward of Virtue

The Three Grades
The Order traditionally comprised three progressive honours:
I. Knight of the Scarlet Mantle (KSM)
II. Knight Commander of the Scarlet Mantle (KCSM)
III. Knight Grand Cross of the Scarlet Mantle (GCSM)
Each distinction recognised increasing levels of distinguished service and could be used only within the context of the Masonic Order of Athelstan.

From Scarlet Mantle to the Ancient Masonic Order of Alfred the Great
A significant chapter in the history of the Order occurred in 2019.
Following several years of careful study and ritual revision, the Order of the Scarlet Mantle was formally reconstituted and renamed the Ancient Masonic Order of Alfred the Great (AMOAG).
The new title more clearly reflects the historical figure whose ceremonial act of investing Athelstan with the Scarlet Mantle inspired the honour in the first place.
At the same time, the post-nominal letters were updated:
I. KSM → KAG
Knight of Alfred The Great
II. KCSM → KCAG
Knight Commander of Alfred The Great
III. GCSM → GCAG
Knight Grand Cross of Alfred The Great
Although the title changed, the underlying ideals remained exactly the same: honouring exemplary service, preserving historical continuity, and celebrating the legacy of Alfred and Athelstan together.

The Symbolism of the Scarlet Mantle

Throughout history, the mantle has been one of the oldest emblems of authority.
Kings, judges, and military commanders wore ceremonial cloaks not merely as garments but as visible signs of responsibility and dignity. The colour scarlet has long symbolised courage, sacrifice, justice and sovereign authority.
Within the Order of Athelstan the Scarlet Mantle acquires an even richer meaning.
It reminds every recipient that true leadership is never measured by rank alone. Instead, authority is earned through humility, faithful service, and the willingness to labour for the benefit of others.
The mantle therefore becomes more than ceremonial clothing – it becomes a reminder that honour must always rest upon virtue.

The Regalia
The regalia associated with the Scarlet Mantle – and today with the Ancient Masonic Order of Alfred the Great – are among the most elegant in contemporary Freemasonry.
The principal features include:
I. A magnificent scarlet mantle or cloak, recalling the legendary garment bestowed upon Athelstan by Alfred the Great.
II. A richly decorated collar bearing the insignia of the Order.
III. An ornate jewel, worn suspended from the collar, signifying the recipient’s grade and honour.
IV. Distinctive insignia appropriate to the various classes of Knighthood.
The colour scarlet dominates every element of the regalia, immediately recalling the historic ceremony that inspired the Order and symbolising courage, nobility and faithful service.
The regalia are worn with dignity during ceremonial occasions, serving not as ornaments of privilege but as visible reminders of responsibilities already fulfilled and of those that continue.

A Living Tradition
Although inspired by events more than eleven centuries old, the Scarlet Mantle continues to speak directly to modern Freemasons.
Its message is timeless !
Freemasonry flourishes because ordinary Brethren quietly undertake extraordinary service – organising meetings, preserving ritual, mentoring younger members, supporting charities, founding new Courts, and strengthening friendships across Provinces and Nations.
The Scarlet Mantle reminds us that such service does not go unnoticed.
It stands as one of the highest expressions of gratitude that the Masonic Order of Athelstan can bestow, linking today’s Brethren with the legendary virtues of Alfred the Great and King Athelstan while encouraging future generations to pursue excellence through humility, learning, and faithful labour.
In that sense, every Scarlet Mantle represents far more than a ceremonial distinction.
It represents a life lived in accordance with the timeless Masonic ideal that Honour is truly the Reward of Virtue !
