Saturday 19th December at the Mount Edgecumbe Masonic Hall, Citadel Road East, Plymouth, PL1 2NG was the setting for the installation of Bro Roger W Freeman (picture, right) as Provincial Grand Master for Wessex.

Despite it being the last Saturday before Christmas there was an excellent attendance of Brethren from the Province, who were complimented by the Grand Master, his Attending and Assisting Officers, and Guests from other Provinces. The Order was well and worthily represented.

Provincial Grand Court was opened by V W Bro Brian G Wright, P Grand Sword Bearer, who discharged the duties of Presiding Officer. Provincial Grand Court having been opened the Grand Master, M W Bro Paul W Johnston, PGHCh, GCSM, entered accompanied by his Assisting and Attending Officers. On this very special occasion in the history of the Province of Wessex R W Bro Dr Christopher W G Ansell, GCh, GCSM, Assistant Grand Master and R W Bro David Buxton, GHCh, GCSM, Past Deputy Grand Master, were present adding further splendour to the occasion.

Bro Roger W Freeman was then installed as Provincial Grand Master for Wessex in a most sincere and moving ceremony by the Grand Master. Having been installed as the second Provincial Grand Master for Wessex R W Bro Roger then installed Bro Keith R D Waters (picture, left) as Deputy Provincial Grand Master in a most friendly and sincere ceremony.

To the delight, and surprise, of all present the Grand Master promoted V W Bro Brian G Wright to the rank of Past Junior Grand Warden and then appointed W Bro Keith R D Waters to the rank of Past Senior Grand Deacon. The Brethren spontaneously showed their appreciation.

At the conclusion of the proceedings all enjoyed a traditional Christmas fare luncheon. It was a most fitting ending to a most important day in the history of the Province of Wessex for so many happy ‘Athelstan Brethren’.
